Sunday Funday (featuring URI, PC, the Free World, Stone Cold and more)

Blog note: Sunday is when I hope to post the majority of my blog posts. If you actually read this thing then Sunday is when you want to check in.

It's that time of year again. No. I'm not talking about your clocks. I'm talking about that time of year when fans of the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team sit around and commiserate about another embarrassing end to the season.

Rhody's real season came to an end Friday night in a game where (in my opinion) both teams sucked but only one could make their own brakes. It was the usual stuff from the seniors: Delroy misses his free throws; Jones tosses the ball into traffic; Martell does his best tree trunk impression; And Eaves makes you wonder how UConn ever accepted him in the first place.

Near the end of the game I said to my father, "The best part is we never have to see these guys (Delroy excluded) again." to which he responded, "No NIT?" S***. The Not In Tournament, a Rhode Island tradition.

I don't know why I act surprised about any of this because it happens every year. In fact, it's becoming as big a tradition as March Madness itself. But hope springs eternal, and unlike those peckerheads in the capital city there is hope. I find Nikola Malesevic to be a very impressive player, hopefully Jamal Wilson, Orion Outerbridge and Akeem Richmond can step their game up, and who knows what's going on with Billy Baron, but when he does start playing he'll only help.

On the flip side, Providence College men's basketball is in the sh*tter, recently getting rid of arguably the worst coaching hire in program history. Have I researched that claim? No, but when you got lucky in your first year as a head coach, manage only four conference wins with one of the best players in the country, recruit players of a criminal element, and have a bunch of commitments rescinded, including a big one like this, you suck. Oh, and then there was this. Keno wasn't too big on commitment when PC offered him more money than Drake, was he?

Anyway, PC makes big moolah getting their ass whipped ERRR competing in the Big East. It's kind of like when Duke asks St. Bonaventure to come down to Durham and get smacked around and multiplied by 18. They like to make money, I like to make fun of them, it's win-win for everyone.

Moving on, here's a few other tidbits worth sharing, including a couple of "weekly sections", if you will:

About the pic: Speaking of criminal elements, one of the best parts of going to URI games in the late 90's (besides going to the Elite Eight) was seeing Rhody the Ram f*** up the opposing mascot. The Minuteman, the Friar, the Owl, none stood a chance against Rhody, including this incident with the St. Joe's Hawk. It turns out that particular Rhody (according to my brother) wasn't a very nice guy and the Ram has mellowed since then. More recently he got assaulted by some degenerate PC fans doing their best Edge impression (flaming table not included). Since then Rhody has taken steroids to prevent such an incident from happening again:

Flan on Films: A few random thoughts on movies I've either seen or talked about during the week. Spolier warning is always in effect.

-First off is 8 Mile, starring Eminem. In this movie the aforementioned music star is a white rapper in a predominantly (?) black neighborhood, so they call him Elvis and The Beav a few times to remind him of this. At the end of the film he proves his rapping superiority by defeating a group called The Free World (who are pretty vicious towards Eminem's character throughout the film) in a rap battle. Eminem then proverbially rides off into the sunset as the conquering hero.

But that got me thinking, what happens after that? Does he go on to sign a record deal? Does he take the world by storm? Probably not. The Free World more than likely burns his trailer down and shoots him dead. Just saying.

-Another discussion was Batman in cinema. Make no mistake about it, the Christopher Nolan Batman Soon-To-Be Trilogy blows all other versions of the Caped Crusader on film out of the water. Or so I thought.

When discussing The Dark Knight with a classmate, they said they hadn't seen all of the Batman films but preferred the older ones over the more recent. When I asked for a clarification, this person said "the one with the Ivy lady." I was floored. Bat-skates, Bat-nipples, and a misinterpretation of Bat Villains makes for a Bat-tastrophe. That, and the film just plain sucks and if you don't believe me just ask the film's star.

-Lastly I watched The Professional and Up in the Air this week. Both good films, particularly the latter. Jason Reitman is now 3-for-3.

Gabrielle Giffords' Moment of Civility Award: This is where I will point out the best in liberal/far left hypocrisy, particularly when it comes to alleged incivility from people like me (and when I say people like me I mean people who don't blame Deer Hunter Barbie for the actions of a mentally ill individual). This week's award goes to the idiot quoted in the video and is dedicated to all the morons who want to recall all the Republicans for taking away their alleged civil rights and not the dickheads who ran away in an affront to democracy.

Muhammad Hassan Wrestling Video of the Week: Expect to see a lot of Chris Jericho, Bret Hart, and this man, who made his triumphant return to Raw and was back in rare form.

Last Word: Believe it or not, but I could actually get a 4.0 GPA this quarter. All that stands in the way is a steel design project. My 27th birthday arrives this week as well and hopefully I receive good news from my latest job interview.

Out.
